SAVE THE DATE: TRASHed Coachella: Art of Recycling Exhibit Preview – Friday April 6th & Saturday April 7th

Posted by

If you’ve been to the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in the past few years you know how important the art has become, with giant sculptures, kinetic and interactive art scattered all across the fairgrounds.  It should come as no surprise then, that even the trash bins are works of art created by international artists!

This Friday night, April 6th, and Saturday April 7th, an exhibition of over 100 redesigned recycling bins (65-gallon bins and mini-bins) will be shown at an artist reception and exhibit at 649 S. Anderson Street, located in Boyle Heights, (across the river from our neighborhood of the Downtown Los Angeles Arts District) before they are shipped off to Coachella.

Founded in 2004 by Global Inheritance, the TRASHed program has worked with festivals, universities and partners around the globe to promote recycling and waste management. After the festivals, the redesigned bins are donated to schools around California, where students can appreciate the combination of art and recycling.

Now in its 15thyear at Coachella, TRASHed includes a wide variety of art styles from a mix of new and returning participants. From whimsical to wild, pop-surreal to political, all are presented in this public art project, with work from emerging street artists,  professional muralists,  and “playground legends,” including LA-based artist Luke Chueh, whose simple but iconic animal characters have been exhibited internationally and inspired a line of children’s toys.

With the call for art going out at the same time as the announcement of the musical line-up, competition to paint is stiff, with artist submissions coming from around the globe. This years’ crop includes artists from Los Angeles, New York, Mexico, and Australia. Many artists will be present for the reception, which will also feature a DJ and refreshments. There will also be information on carton recycling and general recycling tips.
