POW! WOW! Long Beach is a week-long live art exhibition during which renowned artists create large-format art pieces using Long Beach buildings as their canvas. From Sunday, June 24, through Saturday, June 30, the public will be able to witness the creative process as these giant murals come to life. The Long Beach event is part of the POW! WOW! Worldwide series of street art events, which since 2010 has brought murals to public spaces in Honolulu, Seoul, Washington DC, Taipei, Tokyo, and other cities.
The name POW! WOW! takes inspiration from the language of comic books, with “POW!” as the impact art has on a person and “WOW!” as the viewer’s reaction. Together, they form POW! WOW!, which describes a gathering that celebrates culture, music and art. POW! WOW! Long Beach’s mission is to bring art and culture to public spaces while beautifying the city of Long Beach and cultivating community pride. In the past three years, Pow! Wow! Long Beach artists have painted murals throughout the city, from South Street to Ocean Boulevard, creating a walkable, bikeable public art experience.
Artists who will be painting murals during the coming week for POW! WOW! Long Beach include Steven Harrington, Fafi, Lolo YS, Andrew Hem, Shantell Martin, CASE, Kamea Hadar, Evoca1, KozDos, Leon Keer, Noelle Martinez, Tatiana Velazquez, Sean Chao, Juan Travieso, Kaplan Bunce, Fintan Magee, Sydney James, Spenser Little, Jaune, Wiley Wallace, Bordalo II, Jason Keam, Shane Sun, Ms. Yellow, Nevermade, and Joon the Goon.
