“JR and Joel Bloom Square” by Diane Pirie  Cockerill will be part of the Heritage Festival Exhibition.

As part of Angel City Brewery’s Music and Art Heritage Festival programming, join Cartwheel Art Tours  with “Insiders,” founder Cindy Schwarzstein and Steve Grody, author of Graffiti LA, for an urban adventure on the streets outside of AngelCity Brewery. This urban adventure has been created for participants to discover, explore and experience what was once a gritty section filled with disused warehouses, train tracks and manufacturing plants by the L.A. River–and what is now rapidly becoming the hippest and most vibrant and dynamic art-centric part of Los Angeles–the Downtown Los Angeles Arts District, where Cartwheel Art is based.

In addition, the tour will tie-in to the exhibition Lisa Derrick and Cindy Schwarzstein of Cartwheel Art are curating in the Public House Gallery and the Shed. The Heritage Festival exhibition  reflects the heritage and history of the DTLA Arts District and it’s micro-neighborhoods with artists that live and or work in the neighborhoods .

An exciting component for this tour itinerary is that participants will have the opportunity to meet many of the artists who will be exhibiting at the Heritage Festival, have painted murals, and are connected to the history and art of the Arts District, along the route.

The tours overall highlights are as follows:

DISCOVER: The street and graffiti art of the Arts District, where over 100 murals have been painted by internationally well-known artists, emerging artists and graffiti crews from Los Angeles and now with the passing of the Los Angeles City Mural Ordinance in 2013, the stage has been set for more murals, as public art, to be created in order for LA to reclaim its title as “the mural capital of the world.”

EXPLORE: The area’s unique industrial, avant-garde historical cultural history; how the mazes of warehouses were converted to legal live/work loft spaces in the 1980’s, when the City of Los Angeles recognized that artists had moved into abandoned spaces and converted them into lofts; and about the future project developments.

EXPERIENCE: Significant historical points of interest along with artisan and creative businesses that make up the new manufacturing and industry of the Arts District.

RSVP and Purchase tickets here through Eventbrite.

Cartwheel Art Tours offers a unique “insider” perspective for participants on their urban adventures and provides a unique and deep connection to the neighborhood’s art and history. Cindy Schwarzstein brings enthusiasm for supporting the artists and businesses in the district, along with her passion for the art in the streets and the insight and knowledge she has in the community, as a a resident, and as a board member of Los Angeles River Artists and Business Association (LARABA) and other organizations. Author, historian and resident Steve Grody, deeply respected by the graffiti and academic community for his  knowledge of the graffiti lettering and styles, has lived in and photographed the neighborhood for 27 years.
